Halloween Trade Store

This Halloween we are starting a new Halloween math tradition.  Please bring in your candy from Oct. 31st and we will be having a trade store.  Before you trade those items you are not fond of, we will be doing a math lesson on mean, median, mode and range using your treats.  If you do not trick or treat I will place you with a friend for this activity.  Once this activity is over, the candy bag will go back into your backpack to take home.  No candy will be brought to lunch or recess. (Sorry)  Thank you!

Paperless Challenge

As many of you know, our class started a mission last year to become 95% paper free.  While we weren't able to reach our goal last year, we came very close and learned a lot in the process.  This year we have continued to learn more about how the changes we have made have helped the earth.  Last week the students continued their research on this topic.  The students learned more about how paper is made, the impact of the manufacturing process on our world, and the power of recycling.  We are even more motivated than before to continue our quest.  The students are working on spreading the word and trying to get more people to join our challenge.  In the coming weeks students will work in committees to continue our efforts.  Students, if there is a special committee that you would like to work on, please post below.  As one of our students stated, "One small spark can ignite a great fire."  With hard work and focus, they are hoping to be that spark.

Last Call for Box Tops!

Box Tops will be collected for this month on October 27th.  Please send in any that you have at home.  N17's Grandma has been collecting for us again.  :)  We already have 431 for this month.  Let's see if we can break 500!  :)

DARE Graduation

DARE Graduation is coming up!  Hopefully you all received the invitation that came home recently.  Our Westwood 5th Grade DARE Graduation ceremony is scheduled for Friday, November 4th at 11:00 am in the auditorium.  This is a fantastic opportunity to recognize our students, all of their hard work, and the promises they've made to themselves to live a drug-free and healthy lifestyle.  We hope you can join us for the ceremony!

The Kids Should See This

On one of my favorite blogs to follow, The Kids Should See This, there was a great story about a 7 year old boy and his dad who sent a homemade balloon and camera to space.  Not only is this story awesome, but it also complements our new science unit, Variables, nicely.  :)  We hope you enjoy watching it as much as we did.  :)

Social Studies Test

The students took their Social Studies test electronically today.  The results are a computer print out on a half slip of paper.  Sometimes those are hard to find, so I just wanted to make sure everyone knew what to look for. Take care and enjoy your weekend!

Golden Key Team 10-14-11

Below is the Golden Key Team for 10/11-10/14.  These students worked hard to turn in all of their assignments on time and follow all of the school rules.  Way to go!

Trail of History

We had a wonderful time at Trail of History today.  We learned about life in a wigwam, pioneer cooking, militia weaponry, how to make homemade rootbeer, how to build a log cabin, and many other amazing things.  This was a fabulous trip.  The students were complimented over and over again on their respectful behavior and wonderful listening manners.  This is truly cause for celebration!  :)

The only sad part was that there was so much to see, learn, and do that we weren't able to get to.  If you and your family are interested in visiting the Trail of History this weekend, it is open to the public on Saturday and Sunday from 9:00am- 4:00pm.  Visit their website for more information.
