Our Human Timeline

Now that we have finished our map skills unit in social studies, we have moved on to studying ancient cultures and Native American tribes.  We kicked off our unit by creating a human timeline of major events in history.  Through some great teamwork and critical thinking we were able to complete the task.

Wee Deliver

Congratulations to our newest Wee Deliver employees!  These students will work together with other 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students to sort and deliver the mail to all of the classrooms at Westwood.  A special congratulations goes out to D7, Westwood's 2011-2012 Postmaster!  Congratulations!

Posting Difficulties

I just wanted to let you know that some of the students have been experiencing difficulties posting to the blog form home.  We are having this same problem here at school.  After some extensive problem solving, we have learned that if you are using Firefox, Safari, or Chrome to view the blog, students are able to post.  However if you are using any version of Internet Explorer students you will not be able to post.  I am hoping Blogger will resolve this issue soon.  I apologize for the inconvenience this is causing.

Golden Key Club

Congratulations to our Golden Key Club for the week of September 26th.  These students did a great job following the rules and turning their work in on time.  Keep up the great work!

Where in the World is the Westwood Wildcat?

The wildcat certainly got his exercise this week!  He was visiting the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.  “Kilimanjaro” is a Masai word meaning “Large Rock.”  I bet he had a great view this week!  J

Our October book projects are due soon.  Please note that this year students are able to choose a project that will demonstrate deeper understanding of their book.  There is a list of possible project ideas that the students brainstormed, along with additional WEB resources, located in the sidebar of our blog.

Here's the suggested timeline for the students:
  • Finish reading their book and complete the book diary by this Sunday
  • Choose a book project and gather all materials this weekend (see Book Project ideas on the blog)
  • Monday and Tuesday- Write the summary and create cue cards (see summary guidelines on the blog)
  • Wednesday- plan your project (rough draft, sketch it out, etc.)
  • Thursday and Friday- Create your project
  • Saturday and Sunday- Practice presenting from cue cards.
On Monday, October 3rd students should come to school with their book, book diary, summary, project and cue cards.  Students will present one day during the week of October 3rd.  As always, please let me know if you have any questions.  Thank you!

  • Make sure you get a spelling list in your mail
  • Make sure your story plan is done for the camping photostory.  You will need to work on the computers in the room to insert your pictures for your photostory.
  • Read Everglades in your reading book.  Practice using your 6 comprehension strategies (Listen to your inner conversation, Notice when you lose your way, Read-Write-Talk (do this with an adult at home), Follow the text signposts, Merge old thinking with new, Connect the new to the known)

Ch. 1 Math Test

Chapter 1 math tests were returned to the students today.  If a child received a D or a U (below 70%) on their test they should fix and return this test.  This allows students an opportunity to learn from their mistakes so that they can improve their performance next time.  Test corrections should be done on a seperate sheet of paper, labeled "Ch. 1 Math Test Corrections" and stapled to the original test.  Students will receive half credit for any problem that is fixed correctly.  All test corrections are due tomorrow.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

We Love Geography!

Check out this geography game on National Geographic for Kids.  It's called Copycat.  It's like Simon Says meets Geography.  Let me know how far you get.  Apparently you have to get to Level 15 to win the game, but I'm wondering if that's possible??
