Changes for Next Year

I just wanted to take a moment to let you know that I have accepted a position in the district as the new literacy and technology coach for the elementary schools.  Mrs. Griffin, who has been teaching at Westwood for the past two years, will be taking my place.  While it is difficult to say good-bye to the classroom, I am looking forward to working with the Westwood staff, students, and families in new and different ways. I cannot thank you all enough for such a wonderful year.  Your students have bright futures ahead of them because of the strong foundation and support they get from you at home.  I look forward to hearing high compliments from their future teachers.  Have a wonderful summer!

Electronic Literature Circles

Today in our classroom we worked with a program called Schoology. Schoology is a Learning management System (LMS) which is essentially an online classroom. Students can view assignments created by their teacher and complete those assignments on the Schoology Website.  

While the Schoology program has many features, we will be using it for Digitial Literature Circles. Students will be using the assignment section and the discussion session to complete their daily Literature Circle tasks. Students will post their work and then be required to read the work of their group members and respond. The virtual classroom is private to our members.  At this time we will not be uploading any documents or utilizing any of the gradebook features.  

Today students created accounts and created a password. We discussed internet safety and how to write appropriate posts.  The students seem very excited to utilize this learning platform for their novel studies.

Other than make up tests, we are all done with the PARCC pilot test.  We all found the test very interesting.  Click here if you'd like to try the practice test.

Thank you so  much to all of the families who allowed their students to bring in headphones.  This was a huge help.  Students were instructed to bring their headphones back home today.

PARCC Test

Throughout the state of Illinois students in grades 3 through 11 are participating in a pilot of the PARCC assessments which will be implemented in the 2014-15 school year.  At Westwood, students in Mrs. Sauber's and Mrs.Wagner's classes have been selected to participate in a pilot of the PARCC English Language Arts assessment. These students will work with their teachers for 3 testing sessions that week after spring break. Each session will last between 1-2 hours. As a district we will gather information about the assessment content and protocols for administering the test.

Remember the Titans

Our 5th graders will have the opportunity to watch Remember the Titans this week while our 4th graders take 2 additional ISAT tests.  They will be discussing how this movie applies to their lives today, leadership, and their role as leaders in the Westwood community between now and the end of the year.  This movie is rated PG.  A letter went home Friday describing its rating in more detail.  If you do NOT wish for your child to view this movie, please write me a note or send me an e-mail before Wednesday.  Thank you!

PJammin' results

Thank you so much for participating in Westwood's Pjammin' week and donating money to help children with cancer.  Kids cannot fight cancer alone!  Today our school raised $459.21 for the American Childhood Cancer Association.  It was really awesome to see so many people in their pj's today to help with this wonderful cause.

Challenger Space Center Field Trip

Our 5th graders flew a successful mission at the Challenger Space Center this week!  Way to go!!!

Making a Difference with PJammin'

Thank you so much for all of your support with PJammin'!  The 4th graders led a very successful fundraiser for the American Childhood Cancer Organization.  Through their efforts they have raised over $450!!!  Way to go 4th graders!  Through your leadership you have really made the world a better place.

PJammin'

The 4th graders at Westwood are holding a fundraiser called Pjammin. If you bring a dollar or two to school, you can wear your pj's on Friday, February 28th. Money raised will be donated to the American Childhood Cancer Association. The organization uses the money to raise awareness, educate families and communities, buy books for children with cancer and also to fun research for a cure.

Please donate $1.00 and wear your pj's on Friday!  We can help make a difference
