Secret Santa Gift Ideas

For our Winter Party this Thursday, our Top Secret committee planned a Secret Santa activity for the class.  Each student needs to make 1 homemade gift for their Secret Santa.  We know it might be tough to come up with an idea, so below are some ideas the committee brainstormed to help you get started.

Origami
bracelet (friendship, rubberband, paracord, duct tape)
Wordle (www.wordle.net)
collage
clay sculpture or ornament
paint/draw a picture
paint/decorate a flowerpot
make a CD
make a pet rock
ornament
woodworking
photo album
key chain
mug/cup
finger knitting (scarf, bracelet, etc.)
bookmark
plate
duct tape (wallet, pen, etc.)
sewing

All gifts should be homemade.  This is a great opportunity to share our talents/gifts with one another.  Have fun  and be creative!  I can't wait to see what everyone creates!

Giving Back

We are so lucky to have several opportunities to give back during this holiday season.  Please talk with your family some time over this Thanksgiving weekend to see if you can donate to one of the following fundraisers we have going on at Westwood right now.

Project Mistle-Toes is led by friends of Hope Fuller that carry on her memory and effort to bring joy to kids spending their holidays in the hospital.  Bring in a new pair of holiday-themed socks and drop them in the lime green laundry basket in the office.  Mrs. Deering's 1st grade class is keeping track of the total number of socks we have collected on the bulletin board in the hallway.

The Westwood Food Train is a campaign every holiday season to collect non-perishable food items for Christmas Clearinghouse.  These items will be distributed to families in need in the Woodstock area before the winter holidays.  The Woodstock Police Explorers are helping us this year as they bring in boxes and deliver the food for us at the end of the drive.  They will also have a K9 demonstration for the classroom that brings in the most food!

Our very own Emma Bremer organized a coin drive to go to the Red Cross as they help the tornado victims down in Washington, IL.  We will collect coins from now until the week before winter break.

Westwood always does so much to help so many.  I hope you and your family enjoy a wonderful long weekend together as we reflect on all we have to be thankful for in our lives.

November Book Orders

November book orders went home today!  (We love book order day.)  If you would like to place an order please visit our class page, https://orders.scholastic.com/GTVXG, to place your order electronically.  Our classroom code is GTVXG.  If you are unable to place your order on-line, you can also send in your order, accompanied by a check made out to Scholastic Book Orders.  If you would like your order to remain a surprise for the holidays, please let me know.  I can hold them here until you can pick them up.  Thank you!

November, A Time to be Thankful

The month of November gives us a wonderful time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for in our lives.  What are you thankful for and why?  Stretch yourself to come up with gratitude for something that cannot be purchased in a store.  (Required: Write 1-2 sentences including a main idea and a supporting detail.  Challenge: Use rich vocabulary, 10 word sentences, and 3rd level elaboration.)

Camping

Tonight, please help you child pack for the camping trip.  Fourth graders need to pack the items for the little bag only.  Fifth graders need to pack the little bag and an overnight bag, as well as their sleeping equipment (sleeping bag and pillow).  Please make sure everything is labeled.

Please see the packing list that went home to help your child adequately prepare for the trip.  It will be chilly at night, so please be sure your child has plenty of warm clothes to sleep in (long pants, warm socks, hats, gloves, coats, etc.)  Also, please review the items that are not allowed on the trip.  Thank you so much!  We are looking forward to a wonderful trip!!!

Camping

Thank you so much to all of the volunteers who volunteered to help with the camping trip in some way.  Confirmation letters are coming home today.  Please look for them in your child's take home folder.

If your family has offered to let us use a tent, please work with your child this weekend so that he or she knows how to put up the tent.  Mrs. Wagner and I can help with the manual labor, but every tent is different, so we need the students to know how to assemble their own tent.

This weekend please work with your child to prepare his/her materials for the camping trip.  If your child is a 4th grader, they will only need to pack the little bag.  If your child is a fifth grader, he/she will need the little bag, overnight bag, as well as sleeping supplies.  Please refer to the packing list that went home in the camping packet for all supplies students should bring, as well as the items that are not allowed.  Thank you so much for all of your help to ensure a wonderful trip for our students.

If you have not returned the camping paperwork, please send that in to school with your child tomorrow.  There are many preparations we need to do before our big trip.

Also, thank you so much to the families who have offered to volunteer for our trip.  We really need more fifth grade parents who would be willing to help from 4:00-6:00 pm on Thursday night.  We need people who would be willing to help prepare and serve dinner to the students.  If you are able to help during this time, please let me know.

Also, if you are available to help Friday anytime between 7:00 am-1:00 pm, please let me know.  We could use some extra helping hands to take down camp, help with activities, and drive materials back to school.

September 11, 2001

Today, in honor of Patriot's Day, we read and analyzed a poem written by Paul Spreadbury.  While we as adults remember the events of September 11th so vividly, our students struggle to understand the significance of an event that happened before they were born.  This poem brought to light how important it is to remember and honor this day and all of our Patriots in American history.  Please click on the link below if you would like to read the poem.  May you all find peace during this day of remembrance.

This week we are learning about imperative and exclamatory sentences, which are the last two types of sentences.  Leave it to Grog and Sheep to review all 4 types of sentences for us.  Hopefully this is a helpful and fun resource as students work on their grammar packets this week.

Good morning!  This morning in LRC you will have the opportunity to begin your Native American research project.  Please work with a partner to explore the site below.  Read about several different regions of Native American tribes.  By the end of today choose 1 region that you would like to learn more about.  You and your partner may choose different regions.  This will allow you to begin the "Plan" stage of the Plan-Do-Review research process.

Welcome back!

We had a great first day back at Westwood.  We spent a lot of time today touring the school and talking about what great behavior looks like in the different areas of the building.  Mr. Eggert taught us about Cat Keys and what the students can do to earn them.  They are super excited to show their Westwood pride by being positive, being respectful, and being responsible.  Parents, thank you for helping your child to be prepared for their first day!  Please ask your child what he/she did today to earn Cat Keys.  We are off to a great start!

Welcome Back!

Welcome Back, Students and Parents!
Thank you for visiting our classroom blog.  I am so excited to be your teacher for this upcoming school year. This year our theme is, "Westwood Students Shine." We will be exploring ways that we shine in our own lives throughout the school year.

Parents, feel free to use the directions in the paperwork sent home today to “follow by email.”  However, please allow students to receive their classroom blog introduction and their blog “code” before any posts or comments are made.  This is to ensure we are practicing Internet safety. Students will receive this information during the first week of school and the blog will become interactive at that time.

There are many forms and information located on the right side of the blog. These can be viewed at any time or printed for your files.  I checked all of the links, but if you find one that is not working, please let me know. I hope you find this blog informative and a great way to stay connected to your child. It was created with the intention of being a place where we can all communicate, collaborate, and celebrate our exciting school year.

I am looking forward to seeing all of the students on our first day of school, Thursday, August 15th. It is sure to be the first day of a wonderful new school year together.

Thank you

Thank you so much for all of the beautiful flowers the kids brought in today.  I love how unique they all are, but yet how well they complement each other when they are put together, just like our class.  I have truly enjoyed watching each one of your children grow this year.  Thank you so much for sharing them with me this year.
