Challenger Field Trip- Chaperones

Thank you so much to all of the parents who volunteered to attend the Challenger Learning Center field trip with our class.  Unfortunately, we are limited on the number of parents who can attend with us.  I have already contacted the parents who will be joining us, and their child should have brought home a note today with information about the trip.  Again, thank you so much for all of the offers to help.  We are so lucky to have such supportive families.

Conference Notes

Conference notes went home last week.  If you would like to request a time to meet for parent/teacher conferences, please send the form back to school with your child by tomorrow, designating a time and date that are convenient for you.  I will do my best to schedule a time that will work for you.  Thank you.

Challenger Field Trip

Reading Challenge

Congratulations to the 81% of our class who met the reading challenge this week.  These students moved their footballs to the 40 yard line in the Cheetah Stadium and received a football pencil to celebrate their success.  We are working hard on responsibility with the challenge, and we are hoping for 100% of our parent signatures next week.  Thank you for all of your support at home helping us achieve our goal.

Challenger Field Trip

As part of our career readiness program our students will be going on a field trip to the Challenger Learning Center on Thursday, Feb. 2nd.  To prepare for our trip all of the 5th graders will be working together to learn math and science skills that we will be using on our simulated mission.  This week the students filled out a job application for the position they would like to hold.  We also watched a documentary on the Challenger and learned about CPR, blood pressure, and pulse from our own Nurse Nancy.  The kids are getting very excited about our trip.  Please see the handouts coming home today for more details.

The Reading Challenge Has Begun!

The annual Westwood Reading Challenge begins today!  Students need to begin reading 30 minutes every day starting today.  When your child returns to school on Tuesday they should have at least 120 minutes written on their reading log.  This reading log should remain in their take home folders, as I check them every morning.  Please see the packet that went home today for more information.  Our classroom is trying to get 100% turn in on Friday.  Thank you so much for helping your child to be successful with our challenge.

K.J. Challenge- All Star Act of the Day!

Congratulations to A8 and and A9 for having our All Start Acts of the Day!

A8- At school on the bus this little girl didn't have a seat, so I asked this other girl, "could she please sit by you?"

A9- On the bus when my friend was down I made her feel better.

We are learning so much about how to be kind and compassionate people in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  Our K.J. challenge will continue into next week.  Take care and enjoy your weekend!

K.J. Challenge- All Star Act of the Day!

Congratulations to A8 for having our All Star act of Kindness for the day!

"A6, H27, S23, and I all helped A10 dry out her wet stuff in her backpack when her water bottle spilled."

This was a great act of kindness and really appreciated by everyone involved.  The kids are again challenged to continue to perform acts of kindness and justice.  Today we also learned about caring and compassion which have been added to their challenge.  We talked today about how we can perform more acts of kindness here at school, especially at lunch, recess, on the bus, or in the hallways.  Ask your child tonight what act they are planning for tomorrow.  :)

Family Fun Night!

Kid City Council will be hosting a Family Fun Night on January 20th at Westwood from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.  There will be many fun games to play with family and friends.  There will also be a concession stand for your eating pleasure and music to listen to while you enjoy your night of games.

The KCC members are asking anyone attending this event to bring a donation of new hats, mittens, scarves or gently used coats so we may donate these items to those in need in our community.

Come join us for a night of fun and games!

Ice Cream Party!

As we head into the 2nd semester of our 5th grade year we have been talking a lot about being ready for middle school.  One of the ways we want to make sure that we are prepared is by making sure we have mastered our math facts.  I have challenged the students- as soon as everyone in our class has learned their addition math facts we will have a class ice cream party!  Most of the students have already accomplished this, but if your child is still working on it please help them practice their facts at home.  Thank you for your help and support.

KJ Challenge

K.J. Challenge- All Star Act of the Day!

As part of the K.J. Challenge the students have been challenged to do acts of kindness and justice this week.  Today we had so much fun celebrating all of the great acts the kids have done so far.  As a class we chose an "All Star Act" for the day which was done by A8.

"With my parents' permission I washed the clothes and dried the clothes and folded the clothes and put them away so that my mom could have extra time to relax."  - A8

Way to go, A8!!!!  We are all so proud of you for giving your time to show kindness to your mom.  I'm sure Mom appreciated it, too.  We hope you are all enjoying some of the great discussions that are coming along with our Kindness and Justice challenge this week.

The K.J. Challenge!

Today all of our students agreed to take on the K.J. (Kindness and Justice) Challenge. This challenge was started by Martin Luther King's daughter in honor of her father's work and the values he stood for.  Each one of our students took the following pledge:

We pledge to:

• act respectfully
• act honestly
• act non-violently
• act responsibly
• serve my community- my friends, my family, my school, and my neighborhood
• demonstrate moral courage
• and celebrate my ability to take action to improve the world around me in both small and big ways

Students have been asked to perform acts of kindness or justice throughout this week, not only to their friends and close family members, but also to people who they may not reach out to normally.  As a class we are hoping to make a positive change in our classroom, school, family, community and the world around us.
