Making Math Art

Today we worked together in our teams to create a mathematics art gallery.  The students created arrays with objects found in their desks.  Upon completion of our masterpieces, we took a gallery walk where the students wrote the correct multiplication equation to go with each piece of art.  We had a lot of fun fine tuning our teamwork skills while reviewing our math concepts from last week.  

MAP Testing

Please be aware that our class will be MAP testing Monday and Thursday mornings of this upcoming week.  Please make sure our students eat a healthy breakfast and get a good night's rest so that they can do their best.  Thank you for your support at home!

Neighborhood 2 Measurement Olympics

Today our students participated in the first ever Neighborhood Olympics.  Our class worked with the other classes in our neighborhood to measure length, volume, capacity, and mass while strengthening their knowledge of the standard and metric measurement systems.  Their estimation skills were put to the test as students participated in events such as the cotton ball shot putt, paper plate discus, and straw javelin.  I hope all of your students had lots of fun learning, making new friends, and learning how to be leaders in our neighborhood.

Welcome, Mrs. Griffin!

Today at Westwood we are welcoming a new teacher, Mrs. Griffin.  Superintendent Wreski recognized that our class sizes at Westwood were very large and granted us an additional position to provide our children the best education possible.  Mrs. Griffin will be teaching a 4-5 combination classroom, bringing all of our class sizes down to 22 or 23 rather than our previous class size of 32.  Mrs. Griffin's students had the opportunity to meet her today as she visited the school and were given letters to take home tonight.  We are all looking forward to welcoming Mrs. Griffin to Westwood as she begins with her new class on Friday.

Westwood's Ice Cream Social

Mark your calendars for Westwood's annual Ice Cream Social, this Friday, August 17th from 5:30-7:00 pm.  Please join us for frozen treats and socializing.  There will also be a Spiritwear Clearance Sale and the Friends of the Library book sale.  I hope to see you there!

Back to School Night

Save the date!  Thursday, August 30, 2012 from 6:00-7:00 is Westwood Parent Back to School Night.  This special evening has been planned so parents can learn more about Westwood Elementary, the staff, and the great learning opportunities we have to offer our students and families!  We are requesting that only parents attend as no childcare will be provided during this event.  I look forward to seeing you all on August 30th!  :)

Welcome to 4th Grade!

Greetings Everyone!  Welcome to 4th grade!  I am so excited to be your teacher this year  Our theme this year is, "Togetherness is the Key to Success."  I'm looking forward to meeting all of you Wednesday, August 15th from 12:00-2:00pm.  Hopefully you can stop in, drop off your school supplies and say hello.

Our first day of school is Thursday, August 16th.  :)
